Take all medications exactly as prescribed. Continue acid-suppressing medication (such as a proton pump inhibitor) as directed. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and other NSAID medications unless specifically instructed otherwise by your physician. Avoid alcohol and smoking, as these may delay healing and increase the risk of recurrent bleeding. Follow up with your gastroenterologist/primary care physician as instructed. You may require repeat upper endoscopy to confirm that the ulcer has healed. If testing for H. pylori was performed, complete the prescribed treatment if positive. Return to the ER immediately for: vomiting blood or material resembling coffee grounds, black/tarry stools or significant blood in the stool, dizziness or fainting, worsening abdominal pain, weakness, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, or any other signs of recurrent bleeding.
